The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Dec. 1, 1865 – an ad from A. (Alfred) Stilwell offering – “a house for rent in Yorkville adjoining the lots of Major Rawlinson and Major Avery. The house has four rooms, a good well, and a large garden.”
City Directories and History: 1958 – Not Listed, 1966 – Ruth M. Oates (#340) John M. Foster
Originally built in circa 1842 and sold in 1855 to John Avery, this home was owned by Avery until Federal troops came to York after the Civil War to suppress the activities of the original Ku Klux Klan, of which Avery was a staunch member. This was during the early 1870’s when federal troops were reintroduced to much of the area. With the election of S.C. Governor Wade Hampton in 1876, the troops were removed.
