City Directories and History: 1917 – J.B. Steele, 1936 – Barron J. Steele, 1946 – Barron Steele, 1963 – Rock Hill Day Nursery
The J. Barron Steele home was another of the many fine homes constructed by local builder, Julian S. Starr in 1911. He also constructed the Strait home next door and many other along Oakland’s corridor.
The SC Architects: 1885-1935 Wells & Dalton, 1992 attributed this addition to Julian S. Starr in 1911.
The RH Record reported on Sept. 12, 1907 – “A small tenant house belonging to Mr. Baron Steele and located just above the old pavilion caught fire and burned down. It was occupied by Ed Bell, who lost all his furniture.”
The Rock Hill Record on Feb. 8, 1912 – “An alarm of fire was called in from Brooklyn, an African American suburb of the city. A house occupied by Susie Benton, was totally destroyed and the roof a an adjacent house was partially burned. The houses belonged to Mr. J. Barron Steele.
The Herald reported on Dec. 1, 1919 – “That the co-Operative Grocery Company has closed and has sold its stock to Boyce H. Bigham and J. Barron Steele, who after today will conduct business at the stand.” (An advertisement in the same issue shows the Carolina Cash Grocery on Trade Street with Bigham and Steele as proprietors.)
