This building, built circa 1915, was credited to Julian S. Starr, Rock Hill contractor / architect by family members in c. 2010. The brickwork on this house was done by Simon Williams.
The Yorkville Enquirer of May 2, 1922 reported – “The AME Zion Church of York has let the contract for a new church building to be built on West California Street on the site occupied by the present church building which will be torn away. Simon Williams, colored contractor of Rock Hill, has the contract for the church which will cost about $9,500. Rev. D.C. Crosby is the pastor.”
This house was rented to Ruth McFadden and was also known as the “Wallace House.”
In ca. 2017 the house was acquired by the City of Rock Hill and in 2019, it was announced the house will be used as a visitors center for African American history….
