City Directories and History: The architectural records of A.D. Gilchrist state this was a project he worked on in 1926 creating the building from working on the foundations and making major improvements to the building.
The Record reported on March 31, 1927 – “That the safe of the Catawba Lumber Company on West Main Street was entered by a burglar and about $100. was stolen. There was also an attempt to enter the Tri-City Fruit Company and recent attempts at the Rock Hill Coca-Cola Company and Cooper Furniture Company.”

The Rock Hill Herald reported on March 26, 1941 – “Cooper Furniture Co., is opening its renovated store on North Trade Street. W.A. Warner is the Manager and the chain of stores is owned by C.I. Cooper of Greenwood. The company has been in business for sixty years and has stores throughout S.C. including Rock Hill, Chester, Winnsboro, Lancaster, and Great Falls.”
Alfred D. Gilchrist was born and educated in Manchester, England and came to America in 1900. In 1912 he arrived in Rock Hill and began practicing architecture. Several building can be attributed to him; Ebenezer School – 1921, Stevenson Theater, Oakland Avenue Pres. Church, and several buildings at Winthrop University. His son, William P. Gilchrist worked as a designer and draftsman with the firm. Following WWII, Gilchrist associated with W. Lewis Cook in the firm Gilchrist and Cook. That firm had buildings including: Woodland Un. Methodist Church, Park Baptist Church and homes and schools. Ms. Bessie L. Garrison, Rock Hill Historical Research Papers #10 – 1952.
