City Directories and History: 1958 and 1966 – Western Auto Store (#33) 1958 and 1966 – The Men’s Shop
In 1910 this location was that of the Shandon Hotel complex.
“When the elephant house was completed, the two stone houses one at 403 East Liberty Street, were built with the left over stone. He, (Mr. Ray King) was approach one day at his business, The Western Auto Store, 31 – 33 N. Congress Street in York, to buy one of the stone houses. The ARP Church purchased the other stone house to be used as the Church Manse. The date these houses were built in York is well before 1958. My birthday is 1948 and we lived in this house at that time. 1958 is about the correct date for the addition to the original residence of a new kitchen and den in the basement.” Written by R&R contributor, Ginger K. I wanted to correct the dates on the Western Auto Store at 31 N. Congress Street, York, SC. My dad and mom, Ray & Virginia King, owned and operated this business for over 35 years. Moving from a location across the street, the Western Auto Store continued to operate on this site from July, 1948 until early 1974. At that time, my dad sold the business to Mr. Jim Phillips. Thanks for helping with the correction. Ginger King Hilderbrand
