The location of these two fine homes is approximately where the old Community Cash store was located next to the Baptist Church in 2012. (See map this page purchased 26 acres – Aug. 9, 1809.)
This is also the approximate location built by Judge William Smith, who later moved to Alabama. In the 1840’s it was occupied by Dr. William S. Moore and at the time of it’s burning James F. *** Note it was Judge Wm. Smith that purchased “41 slaves from John Springs III in Dec. of 1824 for the price of $15,425. It appears William Smith left York shortly thereafter to move to the fertile cotton fields of Alabama.
*** Note local historian Wm. B. White, Jr., provided extensive notes below on the history of Judge Wm. Smith of Yorkville, S.C. He also listed a number of individuals whom he gave credit to for being of invaluable citizenry.
