City Directories and History: On a Sunday afternoon in the mid 1990′s Rock Hill District Supt. of Education, Dr. Phil McDaniel took a tour of Historic Brattonsville for the first time and meet its Executive Director, W. B. Fairey. It was the perfect opportunity for the two men to begin discussing their mutual aspiration of having an expanded educational program at Historic Brattonsville, in conjunction with all of York County’s school districts. Within a few hours of discussion, the groundwork was established to not only begin the Brattonsville 1840 school house, but also, the future restoration of the Rosenwald School at the corner of Mobley’s Store Road and Williamson Road. Each project became highly successful and award winning programs.
The Brattonsville 1840 School House was also the dream of the Director of Education – Mrs. Pat Veasey, who took the project and coordinated its development on an educational level with the officials of the Rock Hill School District. In the meantime, working with Mr. George Hampton, the President of the Friends of Brattonsville, who also served as the Director of Transportation for the Rock Hill, the project began in earnest. Students and teachers took a pivotal part in raising money and building the reproduction school. Mr. Eddie Robinson, a school district employee, built most of the reproduction furniture used in the classroom using plans provided by Mrs. Veasey.
The model for the building was taken from the Feasterville Academy in Fairfield County, S.C. where Mrs. Catherine Ladd, the Brattonsville teacher taught in the 1840′s.
