The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Feb. 24, 1892 – “There was a large fire in Rock Hill at the Jones Warehouse, used as storage for carriages and buggies by Neely and Fewell. The flames then spread to a blacksmith’s shop owned by John Ratterree and used by John Knox (a colored blacksmith). It also spread to the warehouse of W.L. Roddey and Co., containing about 125 bales of cotton, molasses, nails and other merchandise. Some of the cotton was saved. Most of the bales belonged to farmers who were storing it in the warehouse awaiting an increase in prices.” (It is thought that this is the same location of the warehouses….)
City Directories and History: 1917 – H.G. Neely, W.G. Neely Livestock, 1922/23 – Neely and Good Livery, 1938 – Henry G. Neely Livestock, Industrial Loan Company, State Highway Department (SCDOT), 1925 – Jno. D. Good also listed this as the location of his business.
The Herald reported on Sept. 30, 1896 – “That W. (J.) Neely has bought R. A. Erwin’s interest in Neely and Erwin’s Livery Stables and will conduct the business in his own name.”
The Herald reported on Dec. 2, 1896 – “The J. Wilson Marshall Jr., has become associated with his father in the management of the livery stable. He is occupying the house recently vacated by P. M. Barry.”
The Rock Hill Record reported on Oct. 23, 1911 – “The Neely – Marshall mule company, now has the most handsome stable building in this part of the state. They have just completed an addition to the entire length of the building, three stories high, and thirty feet wide., made of brick. They can handle a large stock of buggies, wagon, harness, etc., as well as room on the ground floor for a large number of horses and mules.”
The Herald reported on May 1, 1925 – “That J.D. Good of Good and Neely, local livestock dealers announced today that he has acquired control of the company on Black Street. The name will change soon.”
The Record reported on March 21, 1927 – “Good and Neely, Rock Hill mule dealers, took a car load of mules to Clover.” [Railroad Car]
The RH Herald reported on Nov. 13, 1941 – “F.D. Marshall has purchased the Henry G. Neely building on East Black Street. The three story brick building contains 20,500 sq. ft. of floor space. The office and warehouse of H.G. Neely has occupied the site and he operated a livestock business there for 38 years. Mr. Neely will retire from business.”
