City Directories and History: 1946 – Rock Hill Furniture Company, 1963 – Rock Hill Furniture Company
The RH Herald reported on Dec. 9, 1899 – “C.S. May, one of our merchants, has sold his stock of furniture to the RH Furniture Co., a corporation to be organized and of which Mr. C.L. Wroten will be one of the leading stockholders. ”
The Herald reported on Jan. 6, 1900 containing an ad – “The RH Furniture Co., has bought out the entire stock of C.S. May and C.L. Wroten and they have been combined in the building formerly occupied by S.T. Frew. Mr. Wroten will be the manager.”
The Herald reported on June 27, 1900 – “E. L. Barnes and S.T. Love have purchased the stock of the RH Furniture Company and will hereafter run it under the name of Barnes and Love. C.L. Wroten and H.M. Wroten are retiring from the business. Mr. H.M. Wroten will return to his home in Denmark, S.C.”
On March 13, 1901 the Herald reported – “Mr. E.M. Andrews of Charlotte, who has had a branch of his furniture business in Rock Hill since last fall under the management of Mr. W.H. Britt, has bought the furniture stock of Barnes and Love. The stock now in the Andrews Storeroom will be moved to the Barnes and Love store. Mr. Britt will continue to be the manager.”
The Herald reported on Dec. 3, 1902 – “W.H. Lynn and family have moved to the City. They are occupying a cottage on East Main Street. Mr. Lynn is employed in the furniture store of E.M. Andrews.”
The Record reported on March 28, 1927 – “That the Rock Hill Furniture Company has made assignment to H.M. Dunlap for the benefit of creditors.”
The SC Architects: 1885 – 1935, Wells and Dalton, 1992 – “Reports that A.D. Gilchrist, architect, designed the York Furniture Store at the corner of Oakland Ave., and Southern Street in 1929 at a cost of $12,500.”
Alfred D. Gilchrist was born and educated in Manchester, England and came to America in 1900. In 1912 he arrived in Rock Hill and began practicing architecture. Several building can be attributed to him; Ebenezer School – 1921, Stevenson Theater, Oakland Avenue Pres. Church, and several buildings at Winthrop University. His son, William P. Gilchrist worked as a designer and draftsman with the firm. Following WWII, Gilchrist associated with W. Lewis Cook in the firm Gilchrist and Cook. That firm had buildings including: Woodland Un. Methodist Church, Park Baptist Church and homes and schools. Ms. Bessie L. Garrison, Rock Hill Historical Research Papers #10 – 1952.
