City Directories and History: 1922/23 – Mrs. E.A. Hough,
Note the similarity of this home and the Tolles house on Reid Street. These two dwellings along with several others were building in Rock Hill about 1910-15, as packaged houses. This meant the plans were drawn by an architect perhaps in Chicago or elsewhere, the components of the home were assembled and pre-cut to make for ease of construction and shipping. The packaged materials were then shipped by railroad to the local contractor who assembled the structure on the customer’s lot. Packaged houses were distributed widely throughout the U.S. and came in hundreds of models and sizes.
Not the rolled roof edge which in the 21st century is a very expensive architectural feature added to very few homes.

Please enjoy this structure and all those listed in Roots and Recall. But remember each is private property. So view them from a distance or from a public area such as the sidewalk or public road.
Do you have information to share and preserve? Family, school, church, or other older photos and stories are welcome. Send them digitally through the “Share Your Story” link, so they too might be posted on Roots and Recall.
