This Building Has History ™
Name: Stevens – Willis Home
Architect: James M. McMichael
Builder: UN
Constructed: 1906
This lot began as the location of a home for Dr. W.G. Stevens, constructed by James M. McMichael, in 1906 for the cost of $10,000. It was described by the Herald newspaper as, “…a beautiful two story dwelling on Oakland Avenue.” A few years later, Stevens sold the home to the family of Albert E. Willis, who was a successful gentleman farmer, as well as involved in the manufacture of buggies in York, S.C.
The Willis family built on to the house, adding extensive Neo-Classical design elements. The intention was to both enhance the house, and make it appear very similar to the Friedheim’s house on East Main Street. The style of home the Willis family built was very popular in the early 20th century, when Southerners were beginning to recover financially from the Civil War. Homes of this style outwardly represented a good turn in their fortunes.
This site is approximately the location of the Legal Remedy Brewing Company.
