City Directories and History: This fantastic home was photographed in ca. 2009 by Roots and Recall. Though the house is listed as the Samuel Ruffin Mouzon house, the outstanding piece of architecture dates prior to his birth. It would be more logical that this style house was that of his parents, ca. 1810-20s. One of S.C. outstanding examples of decorative interior painting.
Mouzon Community was named for Captain Henry Mouzon, an early Huguenot settler in Williamsburg County. Educated in France, he was a civil engineer, planter, and soldier. He lived on a fine plantation on the east side of Pudding Swamp near its junction with Black River about nine miles above Kingstree. He made the first map of North and South Carolina drawn with any accuracy. Mouzon’s map became the basis of all maps of these states made since 1775, the date his map was first published in London and Paris. He also made the first survey of the Santee Canal. Mouzon suffered severely in the American Revolution. His home and fourteen buildings were destroyed by Tarleton; serving with Francis Marion he was so seriously wounded at the battle of Black Mingo that he was incapacitated for further duty.
