Along the Jefferson Davis Trail
City Directories and History: The historic Gist home was constructed in circa 1817 by Senator Joseph Gist who resided near the court house complex on the Broad River known as Pinckneyville. The frame dwelling is another excellent example of the Carolina I-House.
R&R Note: It is unclear if CSA Pres. Jefferson Davis spent the evening here after crossing the Broad River, but it is potential but undocumented site. Having left York earlier that day, this would have been a long trip for the CSA Pres. to have traveled, an arduous one in one day.
“Chalmers Davidson wrote in The Last Foray, Gist, Mrs. Sarah Frances (Gist) of plantation near Pinckneyville and “Wyoming”, (father’s home). Born April 7, 1816 (S.C.); died Oct. 31, 1868.
