City Directories and History: 1954 – Benj. F. Adams, Pearl N. Smythe, James M. Gregory
This magnificent home was originally constructed by Major John B. Steadman of Union in
circa 1850. The home has been significantly remodeled since that time to resemble that of an early 20th century dwelling. The home was later owned by a Mr. Nicholson, a banker and associate of the Monarch Mills. The successful businessman, B.F. Adams also lived here for many years. In 1984, the survey team reported this was owned by the Adams family. The original land was part of the Dr. Joseph Dogan property, Union’s early doctor. It is reported that Dr. Dogan gave the land to the Steadmans to build on the lot.
This structure appears to be #C on the accompanying 1917 Sanborn Insurance Maps of Union, S.C.
The Weekly Union Times reported on Feb. 17, 1893 – “W.A. Nicholson has transformed the old John Rodger residence on Main Street into one of the prettiest and most convenient homes in town.” (It is unknown as to the location of this home but this Nicholson House does fit the bill.)
