1925 – 1955
The Monterey style was a unique style that was influenced by both the Spanish Colonial homes and the English styles that were brought to the west coast. These homes were almost always two stories in height with a low-pitched roof and a large second floor balcony, which was cantilevered over the main façade of the home and was covered by the roof. The walls of the Monterey home were usually stucco but some examples were found with wood or brick cladding. The windows were often paired and shuttered and their surrounds were kept simple in design. There were very few decorative details on these houses outside of simple elaboration on the balcony, like wrought iron balustrades or carved porch columns.
This house style was rarely constructed in the Southeastern U.S.
