City Directories and History: Bargeman, Wm. Kelly of Union County, S.C. continued bringing cotton bales by river traffic to Columbia even after the railroad had arrived in upcountry, S.C. This receipt shows that the eight cotton bales brought in by Kelly were placed in storage at the warehouse for later shipment via the railroad “Depot” presumably from Columbia to Charleston, S.C.
Subsequently, a large number of cotton bales were acquired and received by R. Anderson, not J.S. Anderson from the earlier 1850’s. It is unclear as to their relationship if any, but Wm. Kelly continued doing massive business with the Andersons in Columbia and it is difficult not to assume they were representing the same firm.
