City Directories and History: The historic Bearden – Gambrell family home….a Foothills Preservation project is currently located on Oak Creek Road in the Oakway Community.
Andrew Bearden (1844-1920) was a Confederate Veteran whose father is known to have settled the community of Oakway, SC. It is also referred to as Nubbin Ridge or Center Township. His father, William Bearden, was a gunsmith for the Confederacy. Andrew Bearden was often referred to in the newspapers of the time as the “Duke of Oakway.” It is well known in the community that the Beardens were proficient builders of their time. There are at least six Bearden houses still in the Oakway community as well as the Retreat Rosenwald School built by Andrew’s son, Walker Bearden (listed on the National Register).
