“Another handsome Newberry home by C. C. Davis….”
City Directories and History: This home is very similar to other family member homes at 712 and 1722 Caldwell Street built by the Robert D. Wright family. This home was constructed by local contractor C.C. “Cam” Davis in about ca. 1900, even though there is evidence the family was residing in part of an existing house on the site, “perhaps this one” as early as 1897.
Note this is one of Cam Davis’s excellent examples of using Pebbledash Stucco siding, an exterior siding technique routinely documented in the Hendersonville – Asheville, N.C. region. R&R highly suggests, it was Mr. Davis himself who introduced and lavishly used the stucco in Newberry, S.C. The home features beautiful architectural features, excellent hardware, and beautiful cabinetry.
Mrs. Alice B. Wright died here in 1897, but there remains strong evidence that the major sections of the house, were heavily remodeled or added to, following her death, in the early 20th century. The architectural details, found throughout the home, are reflective of those made popular in the period from ca. 1904-1910. Or was Mr. Davis just stylistically ahead of his time?
This home once served as the Newberry College President’s home, in 2019 it is operated as the Newberry Manor – a B&B.
