The church derives its name from nearby Rabun Creek. In pioneer days the name was variously spelled Rayburn’s, Raebom’s, Raiboume’s, Raybom etc. and was supposedly named for Ray Burns, an early settler on the creek. Several members of the Warrior Creek Baptist Church on September 6, 1823, took letters from their parent church and formed a meeting house at the site of Rabun Creek Church into a branch of Warrior Creek Church. On August 2, 1828, this branch was constituted into a separate church, with Jonathan Deweese, Samuel Brown, James Wilson and David Simmons as leaders.

(Information from: Names in South Carolina by C.H.
