City Directories and History: According to the survey of Cross Hill, S.C., this home was built in the late 19th century by Col. John Williams. The owner in 1980 was Mr. Fred Williams.
“Williams, Col. John Drayton of “White Plains” plantation, “Greenwood” summer residence, and Laurensville. Born Jan. 20, 1798 (S.C.); married Dec. 20, 1825, Phoebe Cox Young (Mar. 10, 1810—July 27, 1852) and Feb. 13, 1856, Anna Eliza Barnett; died June 25, 1870. Church: Independent (gave the land for Bethabara Baptist Church, a “free” church; also attended Presbyterian Church). Public Service: Commissioner of Free Schools; State Representative; Colonel; Delegate to Southern Rights Convention, 1852; Delegate to Secession Convention, 1860. Other: Board of Visitors, Limestone Springs Female High School; Trustee, Laurensville Female College. Slaves: 225 (Laurens District).”
