City Directories and History: “The Jacob Elledge home is in need of repairs but stands proudly on its foundation fairly bursting at the seams with family traditions. Jacob Elledge was born in 1785 and died in 1862 from injuries sustained when thrown from his buggy by a frightened horse. The government Census of 1810 lists one male and one female in the household of Jacob “Allege.” It is apparent that Jacob was married at the time of the census taking and family records have fixed the date of construction of the family home around the 1810 date.
The farm consisted of 350 acres and extended from Duvall’s (now Ekom) Crossroad as far as Reedy River. His estate was proof of his success as a farmer, and the descendants of his slaves who carried his name continued to live with the Elledge family for many years. Even today they come from distant points to see members of the Elledge descendants — all testifying to the relationship which prevailed among them. Jacob Elledge was a charter member of Union Church built in 1843, and one of the trustees accepting a deed for the land on which the church was built.
Several interesting features of the house include only one chimney with a broad fireplace at one end of a very large room extending across the entire front of the house. A flight of steps leading to the second story is in the opposite end of the spacious room.
Jacob Elledge was married to Sallie Culbertson, daughter of Robert Culbertson, Revolutionary War soldier. Descendants of this union include Miss Jennie V. Culbertson, long time auditor of Laurens County; her two sisters, Ethel Culbertson and Eula Culbertson Abrams and two brothers, J. T. and James C. Culbertson; also, Dollie and Evelyn Culbertson and Mrs. Pearl Cooper all of Laurens; and Vivian Elledge Ball of Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Paul O’Dell, member of Laurens County Council, now owns the Elledge property and homestead. Mr. O’Dell is a distant relative of the Jacob Elledge family.”
