City Directories and History: Erected in 1910, during a time of economic prosperity in the region, many town erected fine monuments to their loved ones to remember their sacrifices on behalf of the Confederate States of America. It was erected by the Stephen D. Lee Chapter of the DAR.
“The Stephen D. Lee Chapter, No. 1066 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), was organized February 16, 1907. Because of the efforts of Mrs. R. Z. Wright and Mrs. W. M. McCaslin, many daughters became interested in organizing the chapter and raising funds for a monument. The Confederate monument in Clinton was unveiled January 19, 1911. The monument, at a cost of S 1,600, represented many hours of labor for the members of the Stephen D. Lee Chapter. Along with the monument on the Clinton Square, the depot and business establishments of the town are shown.” Information from: Laurens Co Postcard Series, LCMA, Arcadia Publishing – 2007
