City Directories and History: This house was constructed by Columbus White, an African American contractor (1857-1945). In an article by Amanda Capps, Columbus White’s son wrote, “My father never had an opportunity to get an education – the owners took a liking to him and took him into their home…when he was a young boy. He made sure that we all got an education,” White said, noting that he and his four siblings all graduated from college.
