City Directories and History: R&R has divided the 1939 SCDOT map of Lancaster County into (22) sectional maps. Many of the individually listed schools and churches shown on this section are pictured. However, in many cases, the individual site also has its own post on R&R, which often provides added information and image. Be wise and use the search function to locate all of the entries for this and other homeplace listings.

The Rock Hill Herald reported on Oct. 28, 1880 – “The new Methodist Church at Pleasant Valley in Lancaster Co., will be dedicated on the first Sunday in November.”
On Nov. 18, 1880 the Herald reported – “The new church building at Pleasant Valley in Lancaster County was dedicated on Oct. 31st with a sermon by the Rev. A.H. Lester.”
The Rock Hill Herald reported on Oct. 23, 1884 – “Mr. L. Shurley of Lancaster will take charge of the Lancaster Academy in January.”
The Rock Hill Herald reported on Nov. 14, 1896 – “Mr. L. Shurley, one of the best educators in this section, has taken charge of the school at Pleasant Valley, S.C., leaving his business in the hands of a manager. Mr. Shurley was at one time principal of the Ebenezer Academy and is a brother of J. A. Shurley, York County Supt. of School.”
The Herald reported on Feb. 19, 1902 – “That the post office of Barberville, Pleasant Valley and Belair, have been discontinued on account of the new rural free delivery mail route just opened up from Fort Mill to these places.”
