City Directories and History: R&R has divided the 1938 SCDOT map of Jasper County into (29) sectional maps. Many of the individually listed schools and churches shown on this section are pictured. However, in many cases, the individual site also has its own post on R&R, which often provides added information and image. Be wise and use the search function to locate all of the entries for this and other homeplace listings.

In the early 1930’s, George D. Widener, a Philadelphia sportsman, purchased five old plantations in Jasper County, which formerly had solely been used for the production of cotton. Owned by the Mackay, Jenkins, and Riley families, they were; Mackays Point, Jenkins, Rocky Point, Lockwood, and Bull Bluff. Since that time, these have been consolidated into one, Mackays Point Plantation, now owned by a Mr. Janney, owner of the famous race horse Ruffian. The modified colonial house is set in the midst of huge oak trees and hundreds of camellias, which are taller than the two-storied building. Within a white fence which encloses six acres of the surrounding house grounds, a green carpet of Italian rye sets off the stables and the horses. Behind the house, across the marsh, there is a point where three tidal rivers, the Goosawhatchie, the Tullifinny, and the Pocotaligo mingle in their journey to the Broad River. Extending to the low bluff fronting the marsh, are plantings of huge camellias and azaleas of all varieties. This is one of the most beautiful of all plantations in the county.
