Unfortunately, the log dwelling was demolished and the early 19th century brick buildings are being used as utility sheds. Fairfield County citizens can only hope the remaining buildings are cared for in an historic manner.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12793\" style=\"width: 411px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rootsandrecall.com\/fairfield-county\/files\/2013\/06\/Ashford-house-gate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12793\" class=\" wp-image-12793\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rootsandrecall.com\/fairfield-county\/files\/2013\/06\/Ashford-house-gate.jpg\" alt=\"Gate image courtesy of the Fairfield County Museum Collection, 2016\" width=\"401\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rootsandrecall.com\/fairfield-county\/files\/2013\/06\/Ashford-house-gate.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.rootsandrecall.com\/fairfield-county\/files\/2013\/06\/Ashford-house-gate-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gate image courtesy of the Fairfield County Museum Collection, 2016<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The historic survey of Fairfield County which was conducted in 1983, recorded this dwelling and outbuildings as that of the Ashford &#8211; Boyd &#8211; Sanders home and smoke house constructed in two periods between circa 1770 and later additions dating to circa 1832.<\/p>\n<p>Fairfield County&#8217;s Museum Director, Pelahm Lyles contributed the following information in 2016 &#8211; &#8220;<em>This was the Hawthorne Ashford house that stood just off the west side of\u00a0Rd. #54 (south of #70 at red historic site number 94 here) where Sue Sanders\u00a0lived.\u00a0 She sold it to a person, who tore it down in 2007, to build a modern\u00a0hunting lodge.\u00a0 They started on the 1830s frame addition and\u00a0 Ed Gates and I\u00a0tried to save the log structure.\u00a0 We brought DeWayne Anderson into the\u00a0project, who was going to help us remove the log original section, so\u00a0he could develop a small apartment in town in it.\u00a0 When DHEC was alerted about\u00a0the asbestos siding being removed without proper oversight, preservationists were run us off the property. Consequently, the new owners\u00a0dug a hole, then pushed the log structure into it for burning and burying. \u00a0I\u00a0believe they left the brick smokehouse standing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>However, volunteer Ed Gates found the discarded gate on a road debris pile,\u00a0after having seen it stored in the attic some time before. \u00a0It was later loaned to\u00a0John Sherrer for the big &#8220;Fall Line&#8221; exhibit, (Historic Columbia Foundation), they hosted back some time\u00a0<\/em><em>around then.\u00a0I was always impressed with the fact that, when the floor had been removed,\u00a0you could see the old configuration of the logs rising several rows above\u00a0the floor with small window holes that must have been barely visible under\u00a0the eaves.\u00a0 A later addition of the upstairs brought new larger windows and\u00a0the rest of the height seems to have been extended with thick half-log\u00a0construction up to the top.&#8221; \u00a0<\/em>(This information has been altered slightly to remove some remarks.
