City Directories and History: The historic Martin home was once much smaller. The northeastern end of the dwelling (left), was the original section and consisted on a small hall and parlor style house. The pictures attached show the original door opening to this section as well as the support beam for the original porch. Later in the mid 19th century, this house was enlarged and made into a classic Carolina “I” house style.
Originally reported to have been constructed by Robert Martin of Charleston, S.C. His brother, William Martin ran the plantation for his brother and purchased it outright in 1843 prior to the birth of Robert L. Martin, his nephew. He property remains in the family in 2013, however substantial changes have been made to the home since the early 1980’s.
