City Directories and History: Stephen Greene Memorial Baptist Church (Also known as Second Baptist of Winnsboro)
In or around 1897, the Winnsboro Baptist Church became interested in starting religious services among a small settlement at the son-call “Fairfield Cotton Mill.” In 1899 a one-room chapel was erected on mill property with the guidance of the pastor of Winnsboro Baptist church, Rev. John L. Freeman, Jr., B.J. Quattlebaum, and Mr. W.R. Rabb. Sometime later a windstorm destroyed this building. The local Methodist church came to their aid and provided a place of worship.
About 1908, Mr. J.W. and E.R. Horne came from North Carolina and joined the Baptist and were most helpful in the growth of the church. In 1922 the present church building was built with a sizeable gift of money from the Greene family of New England, part owners of Lockwood-Greene Corp., textile firm. The church was named in memory of the Elder, Mr. Stephen Greene (1851-1901) one of the founders of the company. The church has been served by nine pastors including J.P. Blackwell.
