City Directories and History: The ownership of this house can be traced to circa 1840, when Robert Cathcart purchased the property. It changed hands three times before Josiah Obear, an Episcopal minister, purchased the home for his family in 1870. After the Rev. and Mrs. Obear died, their daughters Kate and (Emily) enjoyed a long and happy life in the home. Many of Ms. Kate’s experiences while living here are recorded in her book, Through the Years in Old Winnsboro. [Courtesy Chamber of Commerce]
One of the long-term residents of this home was Ms. Emily Obear, a very popular teacher, at the Mount Zion Institute.
