Winnsboro City Directories and History: 1961 – Dove’s Gulf Station
The Dove brothers ran a Gulf gas station for many years in the present location of Speedee Wok at 136. Fitz and Paul Dove remained in the business into the 1960’s.
The historic marker at this location reveals that the site was once the location of the current home of Mrs. Margie Freeman at 119 West College Street. It was moved intact to that location after being purchased by Spencer McMaster in 1918. This residence dates to the time of the Revolutionary War and was used by British officers at the time Lord Cornwallis occupied the town in 1781-82. [Information provided by J.M. Lyles]
Please enjoy this structure and all those listed in Roots and Recall. But remember each is private property. So view them from a distance or from a public area such as the sidewalk or public road.
Do you have information to share and preserve? Family, school, church, or other older photos and stories are welcome. Send them digitally through the “Share Your Story” link, so they too might be posted on Roots and Recall.
