Courtesy of the AFLLC &#8211; Pettus Group 2017<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Thomas Anderson<\/strong>, <em>Deputy Surveyor, prepared the surveys of Edgefield and Barnwell\u00a0Districts. Both of his manuscript maps have\u00a0survived and are signed by him, and he is\u00a0credited with having made both surveys in the\u00a0Atlas. He was given an advance in May, 1817,\u00a0for the Edgefield map and received a final payment for it in December, 1818. \u00a0He was paid\u00a0a total of $1,250 for surveying the 1,702\u00a0square miles of the district. His manuscript is\u00a0highly exceptional in being water colored with\u00a0blue for water, red for roads, and yellow for\u00a0swamps. He was paid an additional $1,000 on\u00a026 August, 1819, for his map of Barnwell\u00a0(1,440 square miles). It is unusually detailed\u00a0in that it often shows approximate boundaries\u00a0of individual land holding; it was clearly based\u00a0in part upon plats.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Edgefield map was probably begun\u00a0before the Legislature approved a change in\u00a0scale because its scale is two miles to the inch\u00a0(the scale of the Atlas maps). The Barnwell\u00a0map has the new scale of one mile to the inch\u00a0and so is twice as large as the published version\u00a0and had to be reduced for it.\u00a0In 1820 Anderson was probably a resi<\/em><em>dent of Edgefield District, where two Thomases are listed in the Census of that year. He tells of a considerable number of Palatines who came to Carolina between 1764 and 1770 and settled a township named Londonderry in Edgefield District at Cuffe-Town. A Missionary served here after Easter 1770 and reported 200 families under his care. They had been so long without \u201cthe ordinances of religion, that their children were growing up like savages,\u201d he wrote.
