Secession Convention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>City Directories and History:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 Richard Woods, signer of the Ordinance of Secession from Chester District, was born August 10, 1813, in the western part of Chester County, South Carolina. He was the son of Matthew Woods and Margaret Fawcett Woods, who married in 1804 in Orange County, North Carolina, and moved to South Carolina soon after their marriage. Richard attended an old field school, and Mt. The neat and comfortable frame houses in which his 85 slaves lived were built along a regular street, each with a little garden in the rear. Mr. Woods was married three times. His first wife, Elizabeth Pinchback, died very young, leaving two sons. His second wife was Mrs. Susan (Kelley) Hopkins, who lived a short time, and after\u00adwards he married Mrs. Lou (Hawthorne) Wilkes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Chester&#8217;s Secession<\/span>: Chester had 4 delegates: Alexander Quay Dunovant, John McKee, Thomas Wade Moore and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/7715170\/richard-woods\">Richard Wood<\/a><\/span>. Dunovant was a planter who had been a member of the state legislature. McKee was a merchant and clockmaker with a store on &#8220;Chester Hill.&#8221; Thomas Wade Moore, a physician, had served three terms in the state legislature. Richard Woods was a planter who was known as a <span style=\"color: #76232f;\">&#8220;<em>kind and indulgent master to his slaves<\/em>.&#8221;<\/span> (Article by Louise Pettus for R&amp;R.com)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>His only public service was that of delegate to the Secession Convention in 1860-62 and signer of the Ordinance of Secession. During the war he contributed supplies to the army. See link: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rootsandrecall.com\/union\/buildings\/william-kelly-collection\/?hilite=tucker\">Kelly&#8217;s Boats&#8230;<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Another old graveyard in the western part of this county is known as the &#8220;Woods Cemetery&#8221; located on the Woods Ferry Road. The following marked graves were found there; Matthew Woods (b) 1765 (d) 1826; his wife Margaret (b) 1776 (d) 1856; William Woods eldest son (b) 1797 (d) 1847; Mary Cornelia Woods, only daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Woods (b) 1842 (d) 1855; Elizabeth Pinchback Woods wife of Richard and only daughter of John and Mary Pinchback (b) 1819 (d) 1856; Capt. Johnson Woods of Co. F 23rd S. C. Infantry CSA; Francis Marion Killian (b) 1821 (d) at age 35. He was the father of Mrs. M. A. Leckie and Mrs. B. M. He was born 1813 near Broad River and (d) 1884 at the age of 71. He was married 3 times, first to Elizabeth Pinchback, then to Mrs. Susan Kelly Hopkins, and, third, to Mrs. Lou Hawthorne Wilkes. He was one of the four signers of the Ordinance of Secession from Chester County and an uncle of Dr. James Woods Babcock of Columbia, S. C. Richard&#8217;s old home was a large two story brick affair, said to be among the first brick homes erected in this county. It is located on the old Chester-Union highway in sight of Broad River but a considerable distance from the Woods graveyard.
