The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Sept. 26, 1888 – “At a meeting of Bethel Presbytery, a petition for the organization of a church at Uriel was presented and a commission appointed to perform the organization.”
City Directories and History: In the 1850’s the prosperous farmers and planters in the area around Lewis Turnout became convinced of their need for a place of Presbyterian worship closer than traveling to either Chester of Fishing Creek. With the sale of two acres from Mrs. Narcissa Lewis (Richard Carroll plat), on what was then the Saluda Road, and another parcel from A.P. Wylie of land for “a house of worship.” By circa 1854 the church was in use and the Rev. A. W. Miller was the pastor at both Fishing Creek and Uriel. It was not until 1888 that Uriel was officially organized and recognized as a Presbyterian church. Forty-two member from the Fishing Creek and Purity Churches became charter members of Uriel. Officers were elect and installed. Elders named were J. J. Lewis, T. Triplett, A.H. Wherry and Dr. G.W. Jordan. It was these men who lead the church for the next five decades.
