City Directories and History: Gethsemane Baptist Church, one of Chester’s oldest African American churches, reported to be meeting in 1852, was pastored by the Rev. Langdon Hinton, the minister at First Baptist of Chester. Following the Civil War the congregation constructed a church in circa 1866 on three acres acquired from Annie Tims and additional property from Joseph J. Tims. The Rev. Barney Humphrey conducted services here and the first clerk was Joe Morrow followed by Willie Ware.
