The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Feb. 27, 1879 – “C.C. McCoy and E.H. Abell have recently purchased the old commissary building near the Depot and expect to open a sash and blind factory.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Sept. 27, 1883 – “Mr. E.H. Abell of Chester County has purchased the Sparkling Catawba Springs in Catawba County, NC and hopes to operate it as a resort.”
City Directories and History: A wonderful example of turn of the century rural agriculture in the heart of Lowrys having sustained ownership for generations in the Wilson family. Reportedly constructed by Joe Wilson in circa 1882, a local bridge builder. This home was restored by the current occupants in the 2010’s and continues being called home by the fourth generation of the family.
Reported to have been constructed by Ephraim Henry Abell for his daughter Theodosius who was the bride of Joseph H. Wilson. The house was constructed in circa 1884.
In 1861, Mrs. Ann H. White of Rock Hill paid for substantial quantity of lumber sawn by Mr. Abell. The SC Artisans Database states, “Mr. E. H. Abell owned a 40 HP steam engine and was working three hands.” (SC Manufacturers – Industrial Census of 1860) This happens to be one of the earliest recorded steam engines in Chester County, S.C. Colton’s mid 1850’s map of Chester County also listed Wm. Pinchback as having a “Steam Mill”.
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Sept. 4, 1879 – “Mr. E.H. Abell has nearly finished his steam grist and flour mills near his residence on Sandy River, four miles north of town.”
