“Varina Davis would have passed the Holley home after leaving Woodward Baptist Church……”
City Directories and History: Lovely antebellum home with many of its original features. The exterior chimneys on both ends of the dwelling have been removed but many of the old Turner Holly or Holley home’s architectural elements remain. The Turner family acquired the house in 1855 but architecturally it predates that period and may have been constructed by members of the Wilson or Fant families. It is said the house has a large basement for storage, a rarity in the area. The property was surrounded by prosperous farmers such as the Mobley family and was at the corner of Ashford Ferry Road and the route to Hallsellville or Hallselvile, a rural trading center west of the house.
It would have been the Holley’s Plantation home which Mrs. Jefferson Davis would have passed on her way down Ashford Ferry Road toward Salem Church in Fairfield County. One report states she had a meal at the Mobley’s “Nine Mile Place”, a neighbor of the Holley family.
