City Directories and History: The historic survey of Chester recorded this original structure was used as a barn for the S.M. Jones home on York Street, and later converted into a home in about 1940. We are grateful to historian Ann Marion for having shared this information.
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on June 20, 1878 – “Chester is currently opening a new street to run from Saluda Street across to the street running my the railroad depot to York. It will run by Col. S.W. Mobley’s residence, cross Tanyard Branch on a new bridge, and pass by the colored educational institution of Rev. Loomis. ” On Aug. 1, 1878 the new street in Chester running from Saluda Street to near the York Depot has been completed and is called Walnut Street.”
