One of Chester’s most prominent citizens and successful merchants in Chester’s history, Joe Wylie, the highly successful merchant/banker lived here with his family. See far more information under the , The Joseph Wylie Company. The home was constructed in circa 1905 and appears on the 1908 Sanborn Maps of Chester, S.C.
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on May 23, 1894 – “The Catawba Spinning Mill Company of Chester has elected officers. They are D.A. Thompkins of Charlotte – Pres., and directors: Mill and Watson of Charlotte, Joseph Wylie, J.H. Smith, E.C. Stahan and S.B. Lathan of Chester.”
The Rock Hill Herald reported on Nov. 22, 1899 – “Mr. Joseph Wylie has bought the McClure woods property on West End and will deed it to the City of Chester for use as a park. The effort began eighteen months ago when thirty-four men secured an option on the property. Mr. Wylie has paid for the property and it will be known as Wylie Park.” Furthermore, “The citizens of Chester who does not honor Mr. Wylie for his many deeds of liberality and for this crowning achievement for the City is incapable of gratitude.”
