City Directories and History: 1908 – John R. Alexander
The home was constructed in the high Queen Anne style in circa 1897 for Judge W.A. Barber and his wife, Belle Barber. It was sold in 1901 to John R. Alexander, the President of the Chester Wholesale Grocery Company.
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Dec. 30, 1891 – “The Chester Bulletin has been sold to W.P. Crawford and W.A. Barber. The former owner, F.T. Morgan will move to Charleston.”
The Herald reported on Sept. 14, 1901 – “That the Sec. of State has issued a charter for the Chester Wholesale Company with a capital stock of $20,000. The owners are T.B. Woods, J.G. White and J.R. Alexander.”
The Rock Hill Herald reported on Jan. 8, 1902 – “Mr. T.H. White, who has been cashier of the Exchange Bank of Chester, has resigned his position and has bought the interest of Mr. T.B. Woods in the firm of Joseph Wylie and Company. Members of the firm are now; the Estate of the late Joseph Wylie, John G. White, T.H. White, and John R. Alexander. The health of Mr. Woods has caused him to be confined to his home.”
