City Directories and History: 1908 – Jessie Hardin Oates (1860-1940), buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Chester, S.C., also A.W. Kluttz,
The Oates family had originally lived in York, S.C., where they were prosperous co-owners of the Hunter & Oates store. It is unclear, exactly when the relocated to Chester but it appears, shortly after the Civil War. Here they lived in a splendid downtown home and were active members of the community and the local A.R.P. Church.Ms. Jessie Oates held the unusual distinction to be the treasurer of the First A.R.P. Church in Chester, a position she was honored with for years. She even signed the legal papers to call the Diehel family’s farm (Cedarleaf), note which had been issued and held by the church.
