The Yorkville Enquirer reported on March 20, 1889 – “the Town Council of Chester recently rented a place for their meetings. It is a room formerly occupied by Mr. F.L. Whitlock as a law office.”
Originally the home of one of John L. Albright’s daughters, Mary Margaret Albright Stewart, this house form was a through back to the mid 19th century with late 19th century Victorian
embellishments. It remains one of only a few stucco houses in the city and once had a very impressive picket fence surrounding the home. The South Carolina Dept. of Archives and History states the house was built between 1865-1873, probably by Samuel Mobley, a local attorney. The property was purchased by Victoria T. Walker from her sister Martha Wilkes Mobley for a price of $3500. In 1883, the property was sold to Mrs. Mattie W. Whitlock who had married local attorney, Mr. Frank Whitlock.
