The Yorkville Enquirer reported on March 6, 1889 – “It is said that Mr. W.W. Graham and W.W. Googler will each put up a dwelling house here soon.”
City Directories and History: 1908 – Ms. Emily Graham, 1940 – Atwood H. Wherry Jr., 1958 – Amelia Wherry
Known locally as the Wherry home, this house was constructed at the turn of the century by the Graham family. Several of the Graham-Wherry family collections are now housed permanently with the York County Cultural and Heritage Commission, including a late 18th century walnut flat-back cupboard from Chester County, SC. Pictured while on display at Historic Brattonsville, this piece is one of three nearly identical pieces attributable to an unknown Chester cabinet maker’s shop. The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts has stated these cupboards as having a circa date of 1795.
Mr. Atwood H. Wherry, Jr. born in 1892 at the Wherry Plantation at Lewis Turnout, and his wife Amelia Elizabeth Wise born 1899 lived as husband and wife in this lovely home.
Take a minute a visit the original James Graham home on Main Street, listed as #136 Main Street. This house shows as number 125 on the Sanborn Map.
