The Rock Hill Herald reported on Oct. 7, 1899 – “That subscriptions for stock for the Commercial Bank in Chester were opened on Tuesday and $50,000. in stock has been subscribed. The bank is scheduled to open within six weeks. The new storeroom of M.A. Carpenter on Gadsden Street will be fitted up for the bank.”
Bank building were constructed to reflect the strength of the institutions with classic revival elements of architecture such as the Corinthian columns flanking the entrance to the bank. Note in the City Directory listings, this location has served as both a center for banking and legal matters since it’s construction in circa 1912.
