City Directories and History: 1908 – D. J. Macaulay (Clothing & Dry Goods), 1940 – NA, 1958 – Vacant, 1978 – My Florist, 1986 – Andre Beth Florist
The D.J. Macaulay building is one of downtown Chester’s fine old building featuring a handsome transom, great time ceiling and an appealing front entrance. It was built in circa 1880, as were many of Gadsden Street’s
commercial structures during the hay day of renewed Southern revival following reconstruction. Mr. Macauley operated his dry goods and shoe business here. Currently, the Stone Insurance company, one of Chester’s oldest businesses is located here. It originally began at 136 Main Street shortly after the Civil War.
D.J. Macaulay as also a V.P. with the People’s Bank of Chester.

Please enjoy this structure and all those listed in Roots and Recall. But remember each is private property. So view them from a distance or from a public area such as the sidewalk or public road. Do you have information to share and preserve?
Family, school, church, or other older photos and stories are welcome. Send them digitally through the “Share Your Story” link, so they too might be posted on Roots and Recall. Thanks!
