The Yorkville Enquirer contained an ad on Feb. 16, 1882 for B.M. Spratt and Co., “attention builders and contractors, I keep a large supply of doors, sashes and blinds, lumber, lime and laths, flooring and ceiling moldings, and pine and cypress singles.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Jan. 7, 1891 – “The new Exchange Bank, with B.M. Spratt as cashier and Thomas H. White as Asst. Cashier, has commenced business.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on March 18, 1891 – “B.M. Spratt and Co., have bought the John A. Blake property near the narrow gage depot, and proposed to erect a building for the manufacture of doors, sashes and blinds, and other wooden products.”
The YV Enquirer reported on Feb. 24, 1892 – “Mr. W.A. Cox, foreman of the Rock Hill Construction Co., has accepted a similar position with B.M. Spratt and Co., of Chester and has moved there…”
In 1845 Frances Marion Killian, a North Carolina contractor, came to Chester and built many of the houses in town. One of these he built for himself on the corner of Pinckney and Henry streets. His youngest daughter, Frances, married Barnett M. Spratt and their heirs owned this property until a few years ago, when it was bought by T. R. Mullis, who sold it to it present owner, A.T. Allen.
