City Directories and History: Dr. S. W. Pryor was a forward thinking and industrious M.D., who
helped make Chester a shining star of the medical community. The frame construction hospital at 111 Saluda Street, was eventually replaced, with a very modern multistory brick structure on York Street. This was a state of the art “private” hospital that supported the community of Chester and surrounding areas.
The Pryor home and grounds were extensive, taking up a great deal of the corner lot having not only their wonderful Queen Anne home with its large corner turret but also stables, storage areas, kitchen, and a second home at the rear of
the lot. Notice that the turret on the Pryor house is square, not the routine round turret normally seen on houses of this nature. It was one of Chester’s architectural treasures which has been unfortunately demolished, as have so many fine homes along Saluda Street. The house contractor was Mr. J.R. Simrill of Chester, who contributed a significant number of architectural gems to the mix.
The Pryor home sat next to the Cross house, it appears from the photographs and information available, that both families gardened extensively, as well as maintained livestock on their adjoining properties.
