City Directories and History: “Mesopotamia Church is in the lower part of Cherokee County and attached to the Kelton (Union County) circuit. This church is located between the Pacolet and Broad rivers. Bible readers of that community recalled that the region mentioned in the Scriptures lying between the Eupharates and Tigris rivers (in what is now called Iraq) was called Mesopotamia. The literal meaning of that word is “between the rivers.”
The first grave in the cemetery at this church is dated 1801, so the history of the organization clearly dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. Mr. W. B. Kirby, who is a leader in that congregation, has given this information.”
