City Directories and History: Though somewhat controversial in the 21st century, these monuments were not routinely erected to honor a cause but rather the men who sacrificed their fortunes and lives to the defense of a lifestyle to which they knew no other. Most monuments were paid for by raising money via bake sales, sewing and nice – dime donations.
Even if one disagrees on the reasons the Civil War was fought, and there were many, no one should think but of respect for these humble young men,who grave so much in defense of their homes and families.
