City Directories and History: In 1895 Second Baptist was organized and first met in a converted barn on Walnut Street… 1897, it was decided to erect a permanent building and with the help of Gaffney Manufacturing ( Big Mill ) on the condition that the basement be a school for the children of the mill village. Cherokee Avenue School was not built until 1908. They moved across the railroad and built the building in the photo, dedicated in 1898. In 1901 the named was changed to Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church.
