City Directories and History: The YV Enquirer reported on May 7, 1890 – “J.H. Wylie and W.H. Whisonant of Hickory Grove sold 200 acres three miles north of town to J.A. Carroll and S.S. Ross of Gaffney City. They plan to work the gold mines that are on the land.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on March 29, 1904 – “The people of Gaffney are enthusiastic over the tin mine discovered and owned by Capt. S.S. Ross.”
The Rock Hill Record reported on May 17, 1904 – “An application has been made to the Sec. of State to charter a new tin mine in Gaffney, known as the Carolina Tin and Dev. Company. The capital stock is $25,000. the incorporators are; D.C. Ross, J.A. Carroll, W.C. Carpenter, and M.E. Gettys, all of Gaffney.”
The Rock Hill Herald reported on Sept. 29, 1907 – “Capt. S.S. Ross of Gaffney has a tin mine and is currently installing new machinery. The mine uses compressed air to supply ventilation. The shaft of the mine is now at 135 ft., he has shipped 52 tons of ore which is analyzed at 70%. Some of the tin has been shipped to Germany and England.”
